Date Night

Been behind on blogging...seems like every day needs another 4-6 hours in it.

On Friday night, Bill and I took advantage of my mom being here last week AND Bill getting out of work unusually early to head out for a date. Bill heard about a new restaurant in town that is supposed to rival the fine dining of Tucson. If you've ever been to Sierra Vista, you know a place like this is sorely needed. When we want a good meal, we're usually better off with Bill cooking. Anyway, we were not disappointed in the restaurant, and it was nice to be out at dinner without being interrupted by Drew's trips to the potty every 10 minutes. Thanks Grandma.

Happy Easter!

Hope everyone had a nice Easter. We enjoyed our weekend very much. My mom and dad came on Friday with some new markers and puzzles in hand for Drew.

Saturday morning we went to the park for the community's Egg Hunt. Drew traded in his eggs for a prize--a new squirtgun, which he promptly used against his grandma when we got back to the house.

Sunday morning Drew woke up to the treats left by the Easter Bunny. Then we all hurried to get ready for church, which, with a toddler, always comes too early.

After mass, Drew happily ran after some more eggs during the Chapel's Easter egg hunt.

We tried to take a family picture too, but between Drew squirming and the sun in our eyes it didn't turn out so hot.

Anyway, at home we set up one final egg hunt for Drew. Last year the concept of the egg hunt was a little foreign to Drew, but this year, he was all about it! At this time last year he also didn't really understand "treats." But since we have instituted the use of treats as rewards for successful trips to the potty, he was well aware of the jellybeans and chocolate inside the eggs. Other than the treats, the biggest hit of the day was the air gun that came in his Easter basket. See the video...sorry about the orientation.

Spirit Week at Drew's daycare

Well so much for my plan to take pictures of Drew every morning before he left for daycare dressed in his Spirit Week theme.

Monday: Wear Anything and Everything Green

I forgot the camera in Bill's car from our weekend in Tucson, so I was only able to take pictures of him with my cell phone. Apparently I am not technologically savvy enough to figure out how to transfer the pictures (I think it probably requires a cord I don't seem to have). Anyway, he wore this green shirt that he also wore for the Egg Hunt this Saturday, so here's at least a picture of that...

Tuesday: Mix and Match Day

Actually managed a couple of pictures, but Drew has recently developed an aversion to smiling for pictures. He even tells me "I can't smile." So here is Drew in his mismatched glory. I kind of forgot he was so mismatched when we headed to the store after I picked him up...people probably thought I was colorblind or something.

Wednesday: Bad Hair Day

The one day I wanted to let Drew's hair go to its natural craziness, it decides to cooperate and settle down (even after I spiked it). So the pic, where at least he's smiling, doesn't fully display the madness that can be Drew's hair, especially when it's been a while since his last cut. He did, however, wake up from a nap on Saturday with some crazy hair so there's a pic of that too.

Thursday: Crazy Hat Day

Drew is not a fan of hats so he wasn't willing to even wear one of his regular hats to school.

Friday: Pajama Day

By far, this was Drew's favorite day of spirit week. He loves pajamas. If he could wear them all day every day he would. He especially enjoys that we now let him pick out which ones he wants to wear. Anyway, here's a shot of him after school in his PJs, because we were running late that morning.
By the way, I really posted this March 23, but I started the draft last Monday and I can't figure out how to change the dates on it. Still learning the ins and outs of Blogger.

Runner #843

On Sunday morning, Bill competed, along with nearly 800 others, in the Valley of the Gold Half Marathon in Oro Valley (just north of Tucson). He finished with a time of 2 hours 1 minute and 37 seconds, which is a little bit over 9 minute miles. The race began at 7:00 am so the three of us went to Tucson on Saturday afternoon for shopping and stayed at a hotel on Saturday night. Drew and I dropped Bill off at the race site around 6, went back to the hotel, slept some more, had breakfast, and arrived back in time to see him cross and give him congratulatory hugs and kisses. Here's a couple pictures: first is Bill just after crossing the finish line (center in blue shirt), and second is Bill holding Drew in the parking lot. Bill has aspirations of doing a full marathon before the end of the year...I'm pushing for him to do it in a city we'd like to visit like San Francisco maybe???

Anyway, the hotel had a hot tub and pool outside but by the time we got there on Saturday night the sun had set, so even though the pool was heated Bill and I preferred to hit the hot tub. So we told Drew a little white lie that the big pool was broken and we had to go in just the little (much warmer) pool. Other than repeating that the big pool was broken many times, he had no problems splashing it up in the hot tub instead. He really loves the water and has no fear. Our only problem is that he won't shut his mouth when he goes underwater. We're going to sign him up soon for his second round of swim lessons at the local aquatic center, so hopefully he'll pick that up eventually.

Drew had lasted all day in and out of many stores, lunch and dinner, and the pool, all without a nap, so we thought surely he would fall right asleep when we got into jammies once back in the room. Not so. We put pajamas on, turned off lights, got all the guys (his stuffed animals) and blankets ready, and hopped into the big king bed. After getting settled and looking at books for a bit, Drew decided he really want to sleep on the couch in the room. So we moved everything over to the couch. A few minutes later we moved everything back to the bed. Lather rinse repeat. Lather rinse repeat. Eventually around 9:30 the little guy conked out between us in the bed. Throughout the night he confirmed why we hardly ever (unless we are in a hotel) sleep with Drew...we were laid on, kicked, woken by him talking in his sleep, and generally subjected to his constant moving around. Not exactly the good night sleep Bill was envisioning before the race. But we love him just the same.

When we got home Sunday afternoon Drew and Bill took a nice long nap while I watched the NCAA Tournament bracket reveal and analysis on CBS and ESPN (I love DVR). And just wondering, but does someone on the NCAA selection committee have something against me? They have to set up a potential second round matchup of the only two teams I am truly rooting for (Duke and Arizona)...really??? We've already ordered Mega March Madness on Direct TV so don't be surprised if I'm out of contact from Thurs-Sun of this week.

All in all, it was a nice little weekend.

Coming up: themed pics of Drew later this week. It's spirit week at his daycare...

Cute Drew stuff

Just a few random things that Drew has said or done lately that are cute...

1) He put his sunglasses on the other day, looked at me, and said "I'm cool dude." We often say this when we try to get him to keep his sunglasses on, and he had repeated after us before, but this was the first time he had spontaneously said it.

2) We are working on Drew's number recognition and counting skills. So a couple days ago I asked him how old he was and he proudly said "I two mommy." So then I asked how old mommy is, and he said "Mommy two." I said, "No that's silly. Mommy's 30." Then the little man and I had the following exchange:

Drew: Mommy's forty.
Me: No, no Drew, Mommy's 30.
Drew: Mommy's forty.
Me: 30
Drew: Forty

We're going to have to work on this...

3) Drew got a tricycle from Grandma and Grandpa Calnon for his birthday last August. He frequently enjoys being pushed around the bike, but has yet to grasp the idea of pedaling despite multiple attempts to demonstrate by Bill and me. Recently he has decided to wants to "ride bike" in the house, which considering we have tile floor is okay by us. However, his definition of riding bike is to sit on the bike, buckle himself in and then whine that he's stuck (first photo), OR to simply push the bike around the house (second photo). Bill keeps joking that one of these days he will just duck tape Drew's feet to the pedals until he figures it out. Anyway, now that our weather is consistently in the 70s and 80s again I'm hopeful that we'll be able to work on pedaling outside a little more without having to resort to duck tape.

Our little Picasso

It occurred to me after seeing Drew bring home a few paintings from daycare that perhaps I was projecting my disdain for artistic endeavors onto him. I tend to do this with other things also. I hate cauliflower...surely Drew must too (he actually loves it). I love basketball...obviously Drew will love basketball (if he knows what's good for him...he he). Anyhow, I thought I should give Drew a shot at something more artistic than just coloring (i.e., scribbling) on paper with crayons. So I bought him some watercolor paints and paint brushes. Well of course he loved it (as evidenced below by his reluctance to turn his attention away from the easel and toward the camera). He took turns with each of his 5 paint brushes and though he seemed to favor the blue paint, experimented with other colors too. If nothing else, it entertained him while I tried to clean up the kitchen and Daddy was running (he's currently training for a half-marathon). So here are a few pics of our little painter. He's still in his pajamas (he often hates to take his pajamas off unless he's putting "comfies"--a.k.a. sweats--on), and is wearing one of Bill's cut up ROTC t-shirts as his special "painting shirt".

By the way, I'm discovering blogging is a little harder than I thought. I'm not sure what people want to hear about...most of our days are fairly routine and a little boring. But I'm going to try to do better...at least to put up a few more pictures, even if there isn't much interesting to accompany them.
